Fresh Water Brown Trout Fly Fishing

South Island - New Zealand

"Trophy Brown Trout Fly Fishing"

"Best Brown Trout Fly Fishing Guides"

Scott Murray, better known as “The Trout” around the world has become famous in his own right as a renowned Brown Trout Fly Fishing Guide.  He leads River Haven Lodge's very experienced fly fishing team of guides.  With over forty years of fishing behind him, and twenty of those as a Fly Fishing Guide for the Top of the South Island of New Zealand, his experience and knowledge are beyond measure.

Scott has fished extensively through America, as well as Russia and Tasmania.  The Trout has been featured on two ESPN shows featuring the exceptional brown trout fishery at the top of the South Island with various celebrities.  "The Great American Outdoors" and "The Ugly Anglers" film crew from France have both done specials on River Haven Lodge (see shorts on River Haven Lodge Face Book page), due to the exceptional brown trout fly fishing that they experienced while in New Zealand.   Scotty is experienced in sighting brown trout, as though he had a type of radar connection with the fish themselves!  Tying his own flies gives you an edge, but tying flies to match the exact insect stage gives you more of an edge, this is where Scott comes in.

River Haven's high return client base speaks for itself, as our guide's  personality, attitude, skills, patience, and knowledge bring back clients year after year. All of our Guides have a unique instinct to read the fishery, as well as their client’s desires, and combine them to create a paradise for those that spend time fly fishing at River Haven Lodge. Our fly fishing guides skills are unquestionable, but their uncanny ability to convey that knowledge to the client and give that person the edge and confidence to catch the illusive, wily New Zealand brown trout, is where they shine!   Top of the South Island, New Zealand, has been called "The Rolls Royce of brown trout fly fishing anywhere in the world", by master in the fly fishing world, Dave Whitlock!  River Haven's guides are hand selected to give you the very best New Zealand Brown Trout Fishery, has to offer.

Few others know the back rivers that you helicopter to, like River Haven's Guides.  They tend to guide the helicopter pilot to those “special places” they have scouted out over the years to give River Haven's clients an unforgettable day on the river. Some stream beds and banks are rocky and can be physically demanding, requiring longer hikes and some manoeuvring over heavy boulders (especially with heli fishing). There are other areas that are very easy to walk and offer great fishing. Be sure to let your Guide know how much walking you would like to do. His total focus is to provide you with a positive fly fishing experience.

Greg Gardiner, shown in the photo below with a 12.5 lb brown trout  from a favourite local stretch of river, is a true Brown Trout Fly Fishing Guide. He owned a hunting and fishing shop of  his own and worked as a brown trout fly fishing guide, along side Scott "The Trout", at another top fly fishing lodge for over 14 years. River Haven Lodge is very pleased to have Greg on our team! He has exceptional brown trout sighting abilities, along with very expansive knowledge of the top of the South Island rivers. His upbeat personality is contagious, so whether you land a 15 lb or 2 lb brown trout, you're guaranteed to have a brilliant experience on the river with Greg while fishing for those wiley brown trout.
